PARTICIPATION OF UKRAINE IN UNITED NATIONS PEACEKEEPING MISSIONS

Abstract

The role of international organizations in resolving conflicts and disputes in the international arena is determined. The definition of peacekeeping and the United Nations peacekeeping operations, which is a form of cooperation between the world and international organizations in peace and security are defined. It is noted that the term peacekeeping was firstly used to describe the First United Nations Emergency Force in 1956, which was headed for the Sinai Peninsula.

 Ukraine's participation in international UN missions and its significant contribution to peacekeeping activities are analyzed. Attention is drawn on the fact that Ukraine has become a participant in peacekeeping missions since independence and this has become an important aspect of its foreign policy. It lists the peacekeeping operations in which it has participated since 1992 and analyzes which missions Ukraine is currently involved in. The number of personnel involved from Ukraine who are on a mission is indicated. Attention is drawn on the fact that the total number of personnel participating in the current UN operations on behalf of Ukraine is 323 people. The functions and tasks performed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine during international missions are considered.

The advantages of Ukraine’s participation in UN-sponsored peacekeeping activities, including increased prestige on the world stage, replenishment of the state budget, ability to train highly qualified pilots, and peacekeeping activities for Ukraine are an integral part of the European integration course. Problematic issues in Ukraine's peacekeeping activities that need certain reforms have been identified.
