PECULIARITIES OF TERMS’ TRANSLATION OF ENGLISH DIPLOMATIC DOCUMENTS

Abstract

The article analyzes the peculiarities of the composition of diplomatic documents. Special attention is paid to the usage of terms of the diplomatic speech genre. The purpose of the article is to study the features of the lexical structure of diplomatic documents, namely the terminology of these documents and the translation into Ukrainian. It is important to follow the traditional rules of diplomatic protocol (the use of forms of politeness, conciseness, formality), which is reflected in the use of certain lexical material, including specific terminology.  Particular attention should be paid to diplomatic correspondence. There are four main types of vision for diplomatic correspondence: notes, letters, memoranda and memos. The protocol formulas proposed by the requisites: “The Government of Ukraine has the honor to inform the government about (name of the country) that (about the next)…”.  The form of the appeal depends on to whom the appeal is addressed: Address to the Ambassador, Minister: “Dear Mr. / Mrs. Minister / Ambassador / or “Your Excellency”; appeal to all other diplomatic representatives: “Sir / Madam”; to the monarchs: “Your Majesty”; to the Pope: “Your Holiness. Among the most productive are the following models of formation of terms-nouns  of diplomatic documents are: 1) V + ment: agree - agreement ; 2) V + (t) ion / V + tion / V + ation / V + cation: access - accession, extradite - extradition, ratify - ratification; 3) A + (i) ty / A + -cy: excellent - Excellency. 4) V + ing: acknowledging, agreeing, believing, feeling. As a result of detailed analysis, priority methods of translation of terms into Ukrainian have been used. Examples of terminological homonymy have been given and methods of translating proper names, etiquette formulas of diplomatic correspondence have been analyzed.
