Abstract

The article focuses on the main directions of the interaction between Ukraine and Japan during the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war and their evaluation by Japan, its assistance to Ukraine in resisting the military invasion of Rus- sia. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the following issues: Japan’s view of the Russian-Ukrainian war; the main trends of Japan’s sanctions policy regarding the Russian Federation; features of Japan’s assistance in the context of its traditions and mentality; plans for postwar cooperation be- tween Japan and Ukraine. It is claimed that Russia’s aggression was assessed by Japan as an outrageous attempt to unilaterally change the status quo by force which shakes all the foundations of the international order, not only in Europe but also in Asia. It is a serious violation of international law which is absolutely unacceptable. It is revealed that at the first stage of the war when the Russian Federation occupied Crimea and Donbas Japan’s sanctions were mostly symbolic and did not contribute to the deterioration of its relations with Russia. However, since the beginning of the full-scale war, they have become something more than just dissatisfaction with the actions of the Rus- sian Federation. Characterizing the features of Japanese aid in the context of its traditions and mentality, attention is drawn to the fact that Japan’s aid was not very powerful due to various limitations on its part. However, the Japa- nese government gradually began to consider the possibility of providing aid to Ukraine as a victim of aggression as the principles of international law are violated. It is stated that Japan can become a member of the infrastructure, economy and social sphere restoration of, that is, post-war cooperation with Ukraine where Japan will most likely play a key role.
